Saunemin Elementary School Receives COMMENDABLE Designation from ISBE
Saunemin Elementary School has a designation of COMMENDABLE. The state’s new support and accountability system evaluates schools based on a fuller picture of school quality, including the performance of individual student groups and measures beyond test scores. Like the state’s new Evidence-Based Funding formula, the support and accountability system drives resources to improve student outcomes to the schools in the greatest need of increased support.

Wheel of Wisdom Family Fun Night
The Saunemin PTO is happy to announce that the Wheel of Wisdom will be at Saunemin Elementary School on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the gymnasium.
The Wheel of Wisdom will be running in conjunction with our Fall Book Fair! Families that attend will have the chance to win several family game baskets!
The Wheel of Wisdom, having over 30 years of game show design and hosting experience, continually grows and adapts to the every changing entertainment field. Passionate about blending learning with competitive team based fun, Wheel of Wisdom focused on the inclusion of as many participants as they can during a show.
The creator of the show, Dan Micek, got the idea for the Wheel of Wisdom while teaching in the classroom. It was such an overwhelming success within the classroom, Dan took the Wheel of Wisdom on tour in 1985 and hasn't looked back. A self-proclaimed game show expert, Dan used the Wheel of Wisdom as part of his masters thesis while attending George William's College, now Aurora Univ
ersity.
The 50 minute show includes 4 games or rounds. Each game is played for a specific grade level and last about 10 minutes . Each round includes 6 players as contestants and 10 players as wheel spinners. Each spin of the wheel selects from 1 of 10 categories. We encourage teachers to include specific grade level questions so that learning is time specific and relevant to the school's curriculum.
The Wheel of Wisdom assembly and fall book fair is open to the general public. Attendees do not have to reside or have students who attend Saunemin Elementary School! All are welcome!!!
District #438 Gears Up for Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
-
Last Spring, the Saunemin Community Consolidated School District #438 approved a school calendar that included a 2:00 p.m. dismissal every Wedensday. The 2:00 p.m. dismissal days are intended to foster, develop, inform, and educate our staff on various topics that are pertinent to education.
District #438 is happy to announce that the first four early dismissal days will be dedicated to training our staff on Youth Mental Health First Aid.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
Saunemin Community Consolidated School District #438 understands the struggles that some of our students, families, friends, and colleagues endure on a daily basis. The Distrct is commited to doing its part to break down the walls and stigmatisms associated with mental health issues.
