State Power Hartsburg-Emden Too Much For Eagles In IESA 7A State Title Match

Eagles finish season 23-2

March 16, 2011

In a college match-like atmosphere, and with a loud and raucous crowd behind them, Hartsburg-Emden showed why they have won now 24 state trophies at the Jr. High level, as the Stags knocked off the Eagles of Saunemin, 25-14, 25-12, in the championship match of the 2011 IESA 7A State Tournament.

The loss for the Eagles was only the 2nd of the season, dropping their season record to 23-2.  This was only the 2nd time that an Eagles VB squad had made it to a state title match.  Saunemin dropped the state title in 1989 to Beason.

The Eagles run to the state title match began with their thrilling 3-set win over Flanagan at the Cornell Regional.  A Sectional win over Ottawa Marquette placed the girls in the state finals in Divernon where to dispatched Jacksonville Our Saviour in the Quarterfinals and then previously undefeated Cissna Park in the Semi-Finals, setting up Tuesday's championship match.
